Josh and Mari Hoien hosted the October, 2021 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 10th at their home on Padre Island.
President Lara Busch called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed new member Mike Terrenzi and guests Bruce and Beth Emero. Mike made a big impression by showing up in lederhosen – perhaps next year he’ll remember to bring the polka band.
Most of the discussion centered around Classic Brew and Iron Mash. KEDT-TV still needs volunteer tappers for Classic Brew. Tappers receive discount admission and must complete an online TABC course. For more information, see the KEDT-TV website.
Iron Mash is held on the first Saturday of November, in conjunction with AHA’s Learn to Homebrew Day. This year, AHA has published two suggested recipes for Learn to Homebrew Day – Fuil Croi Irish Red Ale and Lucky 13 Dark Mild Ale. Since there was little interest in forming teams for our traditional Iron Mash team brewing competition, we voted to conduct a public brewing demonstration using the AHA’s recipes. Mary Kay Schultz volunteered her Grainfather system for the Irish Red and Vic Aguilar volunteered his propane system for the Dark Mild. Paul Holder will supply the ingredients and we will drink the resulting beers during the January, 2022 meeting.
The competition this month was open to any style. Entries of the declared style (American Porter/English Porter/Pre-Prohibition Porter, BJCP 20A/13C/27) were eligible for double Homebrewer Of the Year points. With three competitors, the winning beer receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for porter), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for porter), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for porter) and 4th place and beyond receive no points. Four beers were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:
Paul Holder – American porter (BJCP 20A) 34.8/50 – 6 HBOY points
Mike Terrenzi – American IPA (BJCP 21A) 33/50 – 2 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Pre-prohibition porter (BJCP 27) 32.8/50 – 2 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – American porter (BJCP 20A) 32.2/50 – 0 HBOY points
Paul’s American porter thus advances to the upcoming Best of Show round.
After 2 of 6 competitions in the 2022 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Paul Holder – 12 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 8 HBOY points
Mike Terrenzi – 2 HBOY points
James Fowler – 0 HBOY points
John Fulton – 0 HBOY points
As we enjoyed axis deer, hamburgers, baked redfish and vegetarian chickpea curry we drank the competition beers and several new homebrews from Tom Ormrod. Interesting commercial beers included Mark Woerner’s Lagunitas Maximus Colossal IPA and Josie Aguilar’s Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar.
