Chris and Elizabeth Ackman hosted the October, 2019 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 13th at their home in Portland.
The competition this month was open to any beer style. The declared style for Homebrewer of the Year was märzen (BJCP 6A). With two competitors, the winning beer receives 2 HBOY points (doubled if it is of the declared style), 2nd place receives one HBOY point (doubled if of the declared style) and third place and beyond receive no HBOY points. Judges scores for the four entries were as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Trappist Single Ale (BJCP 26A) 39.1/50 – 2 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Märzen (BJCP 6A) 35.1/50 – 2 HBOY points
John Fulton – Ordinary Bitter (BJCP 11A) 34.3/50 – 0 HBOY point
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Märzen (BJCP 6A) 33.6/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill’s Trappist Single thus advances to the upcoming Best Of Show round in November. After 2 of 6 competitions in the 2020 - 2021 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 12 HBOY points
John Fulton – 3 HBOY points
Jeff Spirko – 0 HBOY points
William Lee – 0 HBOY points
El Presidente Mike Wojdyla called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed new member Jack Downey, USN. Treasurer Walt Crawford reported that we now have 26 paid members and the treasury remains in good shape thanks to his deft fiduciary skills. Social VP Mary Kay Schultz reported that we were warmly received at the KEDT-TV Classic Brew on September 26th. Thanks to everyone who donated beer and ran the B.A.S.H. table. We also enjoyed the visit to Hook & Ladder Brewpub in Aransas Pass during the September 29th social. Secretary Wild Bill Lehfeld agreed to register the November Best Of Show competition with the AHA.
In old business, Tom Freund reported that we have three teams lined up for Iron Mash. Each team can add one additional ingredient to the mystery box supplied by Paul Holder. We’re trying to line up door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. Paul Holder agreed to get B.A.S.H. business cards printed up.
We got in the Halloween spirit by “goblin” down the Ackman’s pulled pork. Besides the competition beers, we enjoyed new homebrews by host Chris (IPA and bourbon barrel stout) and by Kevin Nelson (Belgian Hefeweizen). Interesting commercial swill included host Liz’ Odell Sippin’ Pretty/Freetail Bat Outta Helles, new member Jack’s Lorelei IPA, Tom’s Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, John’s Alpine Windows Up Dank IPA and Kevin & Shelley Nelson’s New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Juicifer IPA/Freetail Conserveza.
The usual conversations were overheard …
Wild Bill – “This beer tastes oxidized. How old is it?” Lou Needleman – “As old as some of the women Mark dates!”
Paul – “I’m tryin’ to keep everyone honest” Walt – “We’re basically dishonest!”
