Tom Ormrod hosted the November, 2021 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 14th at his alehouse and chicken farm in Corpus Christi.
Some dude named Jack Heim called the meeting to order, thanked our host and recognized our active duty military and veterans. Paul Holder and Jack gave a report on Iron Mash XVIII/Learn To Homebrew Day at Lazy Beach Brewing. The resulting dark mild and Irish red ales can be tasted at the January meeting. We approved the 2022/2023 competition schedule. Mary Kay Schultz reported that member Ron Merriman is opening Man Overboard Brewing Company near Pearl Brewing in San Antonio on December 4th. Chris Ackman volunteered to bring commercial samples of upcoming competition styles to future meetings.
The competition this month was open to any style. Entries of the declared style (Mead, BJCP M1-4) were eligible for double Homebrewer Of the Year points. With two competitors, the winning brew receives two Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for mead), 2nd place receives one HBOY point (doubled for mead), third place and beyond receive no points. Four brews were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Czech premium pale lager (BJCP 3B) 40.6/50 – 2 HBOY points
Paul Holder – Melomel (BJCP M2E) 40.1/50 – 2 HBOY points
Paul Holder – Melomel (BJCP M2E) 37.6/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Czech amber lager (BJCP 3C) 36.7/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill’s Czech premium pale lager thus advances to the upcoming Best of Show round.
After 3 of 6 competitions in the 2022 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Paul Holder – 14 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 10 HBOY points
Mike Terrenzi – 2 HBOY points
James Fowler – 0 HBOY points
John Fulton – 0 HBOY points
As we enjoyed ribs we drank the competition beers, Tom’s seven beers on tap and new homebrews from Chris Ackman (“Hazed and Confused” Juicy IPA) and Rusty Keyes (American IPA). Interesting commercial beers included Vic Aguilar’s Deschutes Lil’ Squeezy Juicy Pale/Fresh Squeezed IPA/Fresh Haze IPA, Jay Porterfield’s Schlafly Oatmeal Stout/Drekker Everybody Love Everybody Rainbow Sherbet Sour and Mary Kay Schultz’s Pink Boots Road Map Hazy IPA.
