John and Nikki Daniels hosted the May, 2019 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 19th at their home in Rockport. El Presidente Mike Wojdyla called the meeting to order and thanked our hosts. He gave a recap of the Big Brew held earlier in May. We can’t wait to taste Aggie Bill Hughen’s New England IPA, Tim Grace and William Lee’s American blonde ale and Mark Quade and Tom Freund’s American brown ale. Tom reported that the treasury balance is AOK. Next month we elect officers for the 2019 – 2020 fiscal year.
The competition this month was the rescheduled April competition, open to any beer style. The declared style for Homebrewer of the Year was American IPA (BJCP 21A)/Specialty IPA (BJCP 21B). With two competitors, the winning beer receives 2 HBOY points (doubled if it is of the declared style) and 2nd place receives one HBOY point (doubled if of the declared style). Judges scores for the five entries were as follows:
Jeff Spirko – Rye IPA (BJCP 21B) 35.4/50 – 4 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Helles Exportbier (BJCP 5C) 31.8/50 – 1 HBOY point
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Red IPA (BJCP 21B) 31.8/50 – 0 HBOY point
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Rye IPA (BJCP 21B) 24.0/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – White IPA (BJCP21B) 23.6/50 – 0 HBOY points
After 2 of 3 competitions in the abbreviated 2019 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 7 HBOY points
Jeff Spirko – 4 HBOY points
Jeff’s winning rye IPA advances to the AHA-sanctioned Best Of Show round on June 11 to compete with the winners of the February and June competitions.
With the competition complete, we dug into Nikki’s INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS taco salad. Incidentally, it’s starting to get mention off-planet. Word is, it pairs well with Rigelian IPA. Besides the competition beers, we enjoyed new homebrews by Tom (locally hopped “Lazy Beach” pale ale), Tim Grace and Mary Kay Schultz (IPA) and Carroll Pate (“Lazy Beach” pale ale). Interesting commercial beers included Tom’s Alamo Amber Lager/Independence Texas Pilsner, Tim and Mary Kay’s Off Color Tail & Claw Dry Hopped Lager/Errant Brewing Company Pale Pauper APA/Itasca Church Street Helles, Jack Heim’s Saint Arnold Art Car IPA/Independence Stash IPA/Freetail Soul Doubt IPA, Phil Sims’ Coop Ale Works F5 IPA and Jeff’s Oskar Blue’s Can-O-Bliss.
The usual ridiculous comments eventually emerged:
Jeff – “Oh my God, it’s all gloopy in my hands!"
Carroll – “It’s hard to begin with!”
Left over from the Big Brew:
Carroll – “How do you get your head in that – it’s too small!”
Carroll – “Did I tell you about my experience in New Orleans?” Mark Q – “How much penicillin did you need?”
