Tim Grace and Mary Kay Schultz hosted the June, 2019 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 9th at their home in Corpus Christi. El Presidente Mike Wojdyla called the meeting to order and thanked our hosts. Tom Freund reported that the club treasury remains solvent. Tom reminded everyone to begin thinking about teams for November’s Iron Mash competition (no more than 4 members per team).
In new business, we nominated and elected officers for the July 2019 – June 2020 fiscal year. Mike will continue as club president, Jack Heim will be Vice President of Competitions, Mary Kay will be Vice President of Social Events, Wild Bill Lehfeld will continue as Secretary and Walt Crawford will become Treasurer. Walt’s name will be added to the club checking account at Prosperity Bank and his address will become address of record. Tom’s name will continue on the account, Wild Bill’s name will be added and Carroll Pate‘s and Paul Holder’s names will be removed.
In other new business, Paul reported that Nueces Brewing downtown will have a hard opening on Jun 22nd. They have 4 beers on tap now, and will eventually have 10. Rebel Toad Brewing is now serving “crowlers” (big cans to go). William Lee donated a pico brewing system to the club.
The competition this month was open to any beer style. The declared style for Homebrewer of the Year was Low Gravity Challenge, < 5% ABV. With three competitors, the winning beer receives 3 HBOY points (doubled if it is of the declared style), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled if of the declared style) and third place receives one HBOY point (doubled if of the declared style). Judges scores for the five entries were as follows:
John Fulton – Ordinary Bitter (BJCP 11A) 37.0/50 – 6 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – American Blonde (BJCP 18A) 35.2/50 – 4 HBOY point
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Scottish Heavy (BJCP 14B) 34.4/50 – 2 HBOY point
Jeff Spirko – Kölsch (BJCP 5B) 32.8/50 – 0 HBOY points
Wild Bill Lehfeld – Irish Red (BJCP15A) 32.4/50 – 0 HBOY points
After 3 of 3 competitions in the abbreviated 2019 competition season, cumulative HBOY results are as follows:
Wild Bill Lehfeld – 13 HBOY points
John Fulton – 6 HBOY points
Jeff Spirko – 4 HBOY points
Wild Bill is thus the 2019 Homebrewer of the Year. The 2020 season begins with the August competition.
John’s winning ordinary bitter advances to the AHA-sanctioned Best Of Show round on June 11 to compete with the winners of the February and June competitions.
With the competition complete, we enjoyed pulled pork sliders and coleslaw. Besides the competition beers, we enjoyed new homebrews by Walt (Lazy Beach collaboration ale), Paul (ordinary bitter/Lazy Beach collaboration altbier), William (American amber), Lou Needleman (Lazy Beach collaboration English ale) and Jeff (“Lazy Nugget” collaboration beer). Interesting commercial beers included Tom’s Real Ale Swifty APA and Jeff’s Twisted X Pitmaster Pilsner
A few ridiculous comments were overheard:
Paul – “We went up there one winter – there wasn’t anything brewing except snow!”
Paul – “The most important thing is doing it!”
Lou – “I lead a simple life!”
