Nick Jones hosted the January, 2023 B.A.S.H. meeting on Sunday the 8th at his home on Padre Island. For the second meeting in a row, we enjoyed unseasonably warm weather.
President Vic Aguilar called the meeting to order, thanked our host and welcomed returning member Mike Wojdyla. Treasurer Walt Crawford reported that we’re up to 49 paid members. Due to the record treasury balance, we voted to invest in one, three dollar Mega Millions lottery ticket. Surprisingly, we didn’t win. Secretary Wild Bill Lehfeld reported that Paul Holder’s brother-in-law is giving away Paul’s brewing equipment.
Our tally of brewing volume for 2022 is as follows: Club – 24.5 gallons (Big Brew and Iron Mash), Chris Ackman – 15 gallons, Vic Aguilar – 30 gallons, Roger Barnaby – 25 gallons, Dave Clark – 5 gallons wine, James Fowler – 40 gallons, Jason Fransham – 34.5 gallons, John Fulton – 15 gallons, Paul Holder – 55 gallons, Nick Jones – 5 gallons, Rusty Keyes – 13 gallons, Sabrina Krueger – 53 gallons, Wild Bill Lehfeld– 27.5 gallons, Tom Ormrod – 60 gallons, Jay Porterfield – 4 gallons (2 beer, 2 mead), Adan Suarez – 40 gallons, Mike Terrenzi – 20 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 22.5 gallons. Total YTD = 482 gallons beer, 5 gallons wine, 2 gallons mead. Not bad, but we got to pick it up just a little bit in 2023.
Our panel of elite (and thirsty) judges gathered to pass judgment on the results of Novembers Iron Mash XIX. Three teams competed this year – Belgian Bombers (Jay Porterfield, Adan Suarez, Mark Woerner), Hop Goblins (Chris Ackman, John Fulton, Jack Heim) and Team Khaos (Vic Aguilar, Tom Ormrod, Mary Kay Schultz). Results are as follows:
Hop Goblins – American IPA (BJCP 21A) 42.75/50
Belgian Bombers –Belgian Blond Ale (BJCP 25A) 37.75/50
Team Khaos – Belgian Dark Strong Ale (BJCP 26D) 33.0/50
The winners hoisted the Iron Mash Cup, posed for team photos (fully clothed) and taunted their opponents. Look for their team name engraved on the plaque at Lazy Beach Brewing in the near future.
As we dined on pulled pork sliders, we reduced inventory of mostly older homebrews. Interesting commercial beers included Dave Clark’s Stella Artois, Lou Needleman’s holiday variety pack from Sam’s Club and Andy Vaughn’s Delirium Red.
