February 2023 Meeting Minutes

Walt and Judy Crawford hosted the February, 2023 B.A.S.H. meeting and KC Chiefs Super Bowl victory party on Sunday the 19th at their home in King’s Crossing.


President Vic Aguilar called the meeting to order and thanked our hosts. Treasurer Walt Crawford reported that we’re up to 49 paid members. Secretary Wild Bill Lehfeld reported that the AHA’s Big Brew recipe is for Nearly Nirvana Pale Ale. We voted to brew one all-grain and one extract version. Liquid Town at Nile and Mc Ardle is selling homebrew supplies at 20% off until they’re all gone.


Our tally of brewing volume for January, 2023 is as follows: Chris Ackman – 5 gallons, Vic Aguilar – 15 gallons, Dave & Kathy Clark – 5 gallons, Jason Fransham – 16 gallons, Nick Jones – 5 gallons, Wild Bill Lehfeld– 2.5 gallons, Andy Vaughn – 10 gallons. Total YTD = 58.5 gallons beer.


Dave and Kathy Clark volunteered to print new name tags. Mary Kay Schultz reported that our March social will be bingo at Nueces Brewing and our April social will be a Hooks baseball game.


The competition this month was open to any style, with British Bitter (BJCP 11A-C) receiving double Homebrewer of the Year points. With three competitors, the winning beer receives three Homebrewer of the Year points (doubled for British Bitter), 2nd place receives two HBOY points (doubled for British Bitter), third place receives one HBOY point (doubled for British Bitter) and 4th place and beyond receive no points. Five beers were entered. Judges’ results were as follows:

  1. John Fulton– Dunkles Bock (BJCP 6C) 38.7/50 – 3 HBOY points

  2. (tie) Jason Fransham – Strong Bitter (BJCP 11C) 38/50 – 3 HBOY points

  3. (tie) Wild Bill – Strong Bitter (BJCP 11C) 38/50 – 3 HBOY point

  4. Jason Fransham – Double IPA (BJCP 22A) 37.4/50 – 0 HBOY points

  5. Wild Bill – Mango/Rhubarb Pale Ale (BJCP 29A/18B) 37/50 – 0 HBOY points

After 4 of 6 competitions in the 2023 competition year, cumulative results are as follows:

  1. Wild Bill Lehfeld – 19 HBOY points

  2. Jason Fransham – 9 HBOY points

  3. Chris Ackman – 4 HBOY points

  4. John Fulton – 3 HBOY points

  5. Rusty Keyes – 3 HBOY points

  6. Tom Ormrod – 1 HBOY point

  7. Andy Vaughn – 0 HBOY points

As we dined on bratwurst, sausage and various hot dogs, we enjoyed the competition beers and new homebrews from Vic (Tripel/Pale Ale/Sour). Interesting commercial beers included the Ackman’s Shiner 1909, Jack Heim’s Ommegang Neon Neon Rainbows/Gnarly Brewing Korova Milk Porter, Nick Jones’ Lone Pint Nitro Gentleman’s Relish English Style Brown Ale and Lou Needleman’s holiday variety pack from Sam’s Club.
