The April, 2019 B.A.S.H. meeting and pro-am brew was held on Sunday the 14th at Lazy Beach Brewing in Corpus Christi. Lazy Beach provided the professional brewers – Cory Mathews and Drew Burkhardt. B.A.S.H. supplied a rogue’s gallery of rank amateurs.
The brew began at 1:30 p.m. or so. Per the published recipe, grain was weighed, ground and charged to the mashing vessel. After sparging, the wort was pumped to the brew pot for boiling. At the conclusion of the boil, Steve Cook vamoosed with 5 gallons or so of hot wort. The rest of us sanitized our motley collection of buckets, carboys and conical fermenters and lined up for cool wort. All told, B.A.S.H. members took home 65 gallons of the 145-gallon batch. Everyone added their own various yeasts at home. We will sample the finished beers at a future get-together and determine a favorite, which Lazy Beach will re-brew.
Eventually, El Presidente Mike Wojdyla called the meeting to order, thanked our hosts and welcomed new member James Fowler, a 14-year Navy veteran and current T-45 contractor at NAS Kingsville. Tom Freund gave the usual positive club treasury report.
In old business, we discussed plans for May’s Big Brew. Aggie Bill Hughen will brew an all-grain version of the AHA recipe for “Battle Cow Galacticose” New England IPA. Mary Kay Schultz, Tim Grace and William Lee will use a Grainfather system to brew the AHA’s “Trans-Atlantic” blonde ale recipe. We also discussed the upcoming officer elections, upcoming competitions, future education events and options for CC Hooks baseball games.
No Lazy Beach beers were served during the event, but we swilled down more than a few homebrews and commercial beers. Most of the homebrews were golden oldies, but we did enjoy a new American pale ale from Paul Holder. Interesting commercial beers included Tom’s Real Ale Brewhouse Brown Ale, Jack Heim’s Saint Arnold Art Car IPA, Paul’s No Label Passion For Humanity Berliner Weisse and Sweet Water Peach Berliner Weisse, Aggie Bill’s Chapeau Faro Lambic and High Sign Violet Blueberry Blonde and Jeff Spirko’s Yuengling Lager and Black & Tan. Everyone present was pleased with the event, and we can’t wait to taste the results!
